Discovering Calais, an underestimated coastal town

The town of Calais is located in the Hauts-de-France region, in the Pas-de-Calais department (which owes its name to the town). It is one of the sub-prefectures of the department, with Arras as its capital. Calais has long had a bad reputation, especially with the famous jungle now dismantled. However, it is a city in which there are things to see, including monuments not to be missed.

The monuments of the city of Calais to discover

If there is one thing not to be missed in Calais, it is the town hall, next to which stands a magnificent belfry. From the top of the belfry you can see the city and much more: you can see the beach and the ferries leaving France for England. In fact, the departure of the ferries is always an impressive sight: these behemoths of the sea leave the city every 30 minutes, and many tourists watch them leave the city, and return tirelessly. However, it would be a pity to stop there: Calais is also a citadel located on Avenue Pierre de Coubertin, where many onlookers take beautiful walks along the river.

To continue with our historical monuments, you could discover forts such as Nieulay, Lapin or even Risban. These monuments show that Calais is a city full of history and still has a lot to tell us today. Finally, what would a port city be without its lighthouse? This 58-metre high lighthouse, which can be reached by 271 steps, is located in the port district of Courgain maritime.

The districts of the city of Calais not to be missed
