Prefecture of Puy-de-Dôme, the city of Clermont-Ferrand offers a magnificent view of the chain of sleeping volcanoes. Known by nature lovers for its natural site classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the city is also proud of its universities and its 15-man rugby team.

Walking in the streets of Clermont-Ferrand requires good shoes. Indeed, there are many slopes, but you will not regret your visit. First of all, because the Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption cathedral is magnificent, both in its exterior and interior architecture. It was built in the 13th century in the pure gothic style. What impresses the visitors the most is the dark color of the stone of Volvic which contrasts with the color of its stained glasses. At night, the cathedral is particularly well highlighted by lighting. The basilica Notre-Dame-du-Port is also a true jewel of Romanesque art. On the large Place de Jaude, you can admire the statue of Vercingetorix, who gave his name to a great battle.
A classified natural site
Around Clermont-Ferrand are the Limagne fault and the Puys chain, classified by UNESCO as a protected tectonic site. The Panoramic des Dômes is a cogwheel train that climbs to the top of the Puy-de-Dôme at an altitude of 1,465 meters. From there, the visitor has access to a magnificent 360° panorama. The Montjuzet park located on the heights of the city allows to have a very beautiful view on the cathedral as well as on the chain of volcanoes.
The ideal activities to do with the family
It is not easy to discover the volcanoes with young children. If the teenagers can go on long hikes on the Puy de Dôme or the Puy Pariou for example, we will take the little ones to the Vulcania space which is a volcano museum that offers more playful activities for children. It is better to learn while having fun. Children and nostalgic people also enjoy visiting the Michelin Adventure site. However, their favorite is to go to the Lecoq garden where they can enjoy the green spaces, the merry-go-rounds of the playgrounds as well as the medieval remains of the post office of the former Bien-Assis castle, now disappeared and moved to the park.
