Visit the city of Chartres, near Paris
Located between Paris and Orleans in the southwest of Paris the city of Chartres is one of the favorite places to visit for history and architecture enthusiasts. Prefecture of the Eure-et-Loir, Chartres owes its name to its Gallo-Roman origins since it is a derivative of the name of the tribe that lived there at the time. Nevertheless, its most beautiful treasures come from the Middle Ages.The remains of the Middle Ages
The streets of the old town keep the vestiges of the Middle Ages, with the presence of very steep staircases like the Saint-Nicolas mound, with its winding streets and its half-timbered houses. For example, one can admire the incredible facade of the house of the salmon which sheltered a fishmonger. Its corbelled sculptures are the witnesses of it. The sculptures above the windows of the canonical house are also remarkable. In the lower town, you will find many half-timbered houses. We will stop in front of the corbelled staircase of the queen Berthe, leaned to the facade of a hotel. On the carved half-timberings nevertheless, the most imposing building in Chartres is its cathedral Notre-Dame. It is still considered one of the most emblematic and representative monuments of Gothic art. Its construction dates back to the 13th century and it is now classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
